Breast Cancer Awareness Seminar 2012
Social Welfare Society, in collaboration with Community Health Sciences Department- Peshawar Medical College, organized the annual “Breast cancer Awareness seminar” on Monday, 22nd October, 2012 at Peshawar Medical College. The Seminar included Poster Competition, Self Breast Examination (SBE) Session and Lectures by health professionals on Breast Cancer. The aim of this seminar was to promote awareness regarding prevention and early diagnosis of breast cancer among female population, who are at high risk of attaining Breast Cancer.
Breast cancer is a type of cancer originating from breast tissue, most commonly from the inner lining of milk ducts or the lobules that supply the ducts with milk. It is the most common cancer among women in both the developed and the developing world and claims a large number of lives each year globally. Surprisingly, a large portion of these mortalities are preventable only through early detection. With this event, Social Welfare Society- Peshawar Medical College promoted the benefits of early detection to this deadly disease.
The day started with Poster Competition on Breast Cancer awareness, with various posters being put on display in the Examination Hall. The seminar officially got underway with recitation of verses from the Holy Quran by Mehdi Haq. Dr. Fauzia Rauf, Assistant Professor in Pathology Department, briefed the audience with the introduction to breast cancer. The next speaker Dr. Khurshid Ahmad, Assistant Professor, Surgery Department Mercy Teaching Hospital, took the audience through a tour of cancer growth process and risk factors. Addressing the audience, he said that early detection could result in survival rate of over 90%, but unfortunately due to lack of awareness in Pakistan this disease is usually detected at advanced stages when nothing could turn the course of the disease. The speaker also gave a detailed lecture-cum-multimedia presentation about symptoms, self-examination methods, screening, prevention and treatment of breast cancer.
The next speaker, Dr Sundas Mohmand, House Officer at Hayatabad Medical Comples, spoke on the social aspects of Breast cancer. A major focal area of her speech dealt with depression in relation to cancer. The speaker stressed on the importance of counseling the patients during the entire process of treatment.
Dr. Afshan Hussain Khattak, Consultant Pediatric Oncology Hospitalist at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital and Research Center (SKMH&RC), was the Chief Guest on the occasion. In her speech she laid stress on initiating ingenious research projects in the fields of oncology. She insisted on the need of having more oncologists in the country. She further said that undergraduate students have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience by working on individual or group research projects and should actively participate in such activities to play their role in creating awareness.
The seminar concluded with distribution of prizes among organizers of SWS and poster competition winners. This was followed by refreshments for the distinguished guests.
