Breast Cancer Awareness Drive at Peshawar Medical College

The Social Welfare Society of Peshawar Medical College, in collaboration with the Community Health Sciences Department of Peshawar Medical College, hosted a programme today to raise awareness about breast cancer in Peshawar.
The program, held at Peshawar Medical College, featured sessions on breast cancer given by various doctors to students of University Model School, Islamia College Peshawar, Forward Girls College, Rehman Medical College,
and Frontier College.
Dr. Abid Jameel, Associate Professor and Head of Medical Oncology at Hayatabad Medical Complex, discussed the risk factors of breast cancer and screening. Worldwide, every 3 minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer and every 12 minutes, one woman dies of breast cancer, said Dr. Abid Jameel. Dr. Khurshid Ahmad, Associate Professor at Peshawar Medical College and consultant surgeon at Mercy Teaching Hospital, talked about the various surgical treatments available for this disease, and emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and timely treatment. Various social aspects of breast cancer were highlighted by Dr. Saadia Nazeem, a former Associate Professor and a practising surgeon, who stressed on the cultural issues that women have to face while dealing with this serious disease.
Later, a physical training session was delivered by Miss Saima Qazi of Blossoms Institute Peshawar. Female students from various colleges of Peshawar were taught the procedure of Breast Self-Examination by the students of Peshawar Medical College. Pamphlets and leaflets about Breast Self-Examination were also distributed to the visitors.
