Hepatitis B Vaccination Drive at PMC
In order to provide Immunity against Hepatitis-B, Blood Wing of Social Welfare Society-Peshawar Medical College successfully arranged a free vaccination camp for the students of 1st year and 2nd year MBBS and BDS students of Peshawar Medical College and Peshawar Dental College on 6th and 7th Jan, 2012, respectively.
Hepatitis B is a potentially life-threatening liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus. It is a major global health problem and the most serious type of viral hepatitis. Worldwide, an estimated two billion people have been infected with the hepatitis B virus (HBV), and more than 350 million have chronic (long-term) liver infections. A vaccine against hepatitis B has been available since 1982. Hepatitis B vaccine is 95% effective in preventing HBV infection and its chronic consequences.
Being the very first venture of Blood Wing, an inauguration ceremony was held in which faculty members and students participated. Prof. Dr Najib-ul-Haq, Principal Peshawar Medical College, inaugurated the Vaccination Camp. He also visited the camp where he met students and the technical staff of the vaccination camp and discussed few things pertaining to Hepatitis B vaccination. It is to be mentioned here that separate arrangements were made for male and female students in Biochemistry and physiology labs respectively.
Students were issued separate vaccination cards after vaccination. The vaccination card contained complete bio data of the student, dosage detail and date of vaccination. In the first phase, a total of 140 students were vaccinated. The vaccination of second booster dose will be arranged after a month (In sha’Allah).
Blood Wing- SWS pay special gratitude to Department of Pathology for extending their full support in carrying out the vaccination camp. Blood Wing SWS also appreciates the technical and logistic support provided by Biochemistry and Physiology Departments.
We are highly obliged to the organisers, volunteers and cabinet members of SWS for their generous and selfless support in making the Vaccination Camp possible.
